The Dominican Republic is a mountainous country and was originally inhabited by the Haitians.  They were driven out by Juan Pablo Duarte in 1844, who is still known as the hero of the Dominican to this day.  The country was taken over by Dictator Rafael L. Trujillo in 1930 and he was eventually exiled in 1961.  The next five years consisted of violence but in 1966 President Balaguer was elected and peace followed.  Sugar, tobacco and tourism are the major players in the economy.
