BOOK REVIEW - The Martian

Have you read ‘The Martian" by Andy Weir?  We recently read this book and it blew our socks off!  What a great read!  This was Mr. Weir’s first book he has ever written and it did not fail to impress.  In fact, the book’s film rights were sold almost immediately and a film adaptation will be in theatres this November starring Matt Damon!

The book is about an astronaut who is stranded on Mars after an exploration mission.  What makes this book so compelling?  Weir used actual mathematics and science to give the reader real examples of what life would be like on the planet.  Temperatures, food growth, space suits, Mars Rovers, water accumulation and portable living quarters are just some of the cool things Weir features in this science fiction novel.

The novel places you in the mind of botanist Mark Watney, a man who was selected for the Mars exploration to determine if food could be grown on the red planet.  Through a series of unfortunate events, the crew is forced to evacuate and they accidently leave behind Watney.  He his forced to survive in this rugged planet until a crew can return to retrieve him.  This book combines the perfect mix of fun, science and suspense.

Organizing Your Next Road Trip

The season of road-trips is upon us!  As the temperatures climb and the days get longer, we will yearn to hit the road for some much needed vacation.  Organizing the trip is one thing, but your car…that is a completely different story.  We came up with five great tips to keep your vehicle organized, clean and accessible for your upcoming adventure.

1)     Designate a trash bag—We recommend that you use a paper bag to store your trash in as you drive across our fine states.  In fact, grab a couple—one for recycling and one for trash.  Keep these bags either in your trunk or on the floor behind you (if there is no one else there) and throw away at your destination.

2)     Clean out your console—Before you take off, go through your main console and remove anything that you will not need.  This can help reduce clutter as you progress along your trip…but we recommend keeping the Summer Fun Jams mix you made ten years ago.

3)     Tie extra shoes together—It is always good to bring an extra pair of shoes, but what a pain when you can only find one!  Tie your pair of shoes together before you load them up so if you can reach one, you can reach the other.

4)     Vacuum first—Trust us, start the trip off on a clean note to alleviate a headache later.  Getting the extra dirt out of your vehicle early on will help you enjoy your trip that much more.

5)     Laundry basket food—This one is our favorite.  Put your food in a laundry basket!  Why a laundry basket?  They are see through, easy to carry and light!  All of your dry foods, snacks and drinks you don’t need chilled should go in a laundry basket.  They are durable, easy to pack and great for toting things around!

Have a great trip!

S.O.S...Save Our Shoes!

Kids are not the only ones who fly through shoes—we adults do too!  More often than not, we look down to the ground and see how beat up our favorite shoes have become.  We found some solutions for you!  Believe it or not these tips help extend the life of your shoes:

Wipe Your Shoes- This may seem like a no-brainer, but you would be surprised how many people do not wipe their shoes off when they come inside.  When you fail to wipe them on a doormat, the excess dirt, rocks and dust build up on the bottom.  Over time, these particles wear down the rubber on the bottom of your shoes.

Lace 'em Up- Most shoes were designed to be laced up firmly when worn.  Obviously we want to make sure they aren’t too tight, but a well-tied shoe can increase its life span.  When you fail to tie the shoe firmly it causes your foot to shift around in the shoe.  All of this movement causes the stitching and the soul to wear and eventually break.  It can also cause the plastic in the heel to bend or crack.

Tie and Untie- We have all done it.  We leave our shoes tied and slip them on and off.  This, unfortunately, really wears on the toe and the heel of the shoe.  When we shove our foot into the shoe it causes the plastic in the heel to bend and excess force to be pushed onto the toe stitching.  Try to tie and untie your shoes every time you put them on and take them off.

2 Pairs- Having an extra pair of shoes for the outdoors or sports related activities will save you money in the long run.  Plus, your sports shoes will break in properly for maximum flexibility and athletic feel (we only want to see you dominate in your rec basketball league).

Socks are Saviors- The right kind of socks are also crucial to your shoe life.  When performing high movement or athletic activities make sure you are wearing a decent cotton or athletic sock.  These kinds of socks allow for more flexibility and movement in shoe and they reduce the effects of friction.  Save your shoe’s soul!  Wear good socks!

Is Your Vehicle Ready for Winter?

With winter right around the corner, it's important that you make sure your vehicle is prepared to handle the season. Certain precautions can be taken to ensure your vehicle remains in proper working order during the harsh North Dakota winters. It's important to check the tread on your tires as well as their pressure. For North Dakota winters, you may even want to consider investing in snow tires, which are made of cold-resistant rubber and have deeper treads for better traction.
When road salt and moisture combine, it can cause extensive damage to the exterior of your vehicle and begin to eat away at the paint. Wax your vehicle before the winter months and it can help protect it from corrosive materials.
Cold temperatures often cause oil to thicken, which is bad news for your engine. Using an oil of a lower viscosity will prevent damage to the engine. Your owner's manual will inform you of the correct oil to use.
When it comes to maintaining visibility through your windshield, changing your wiper blades to special winter blades will help prevent snow and ice from clogging up your wipers. Switching to a winter wiper fluid can also prevent ice build-up on your windshield. Many brands carry specific washer fluids that won't freeze in low temperatures and actually help melt the ice on your windshield.
By following these simple precautions, you can be confident that your vehicle is ready to take on the cold temperatures coming our way. For more information on how to prepare for the winter, take a look at this article from Car and Driver.

Ready for Spring?

Friends,

Finally, old man winter is begrudgingly giving way to spring showers and (hopefully) warmer weather. We all know harsh North Dakota winters can wreak havoc with automobiles of every age, so we need to be sure everything's in working order for safe springtime travel. Here are a few tips to keep in mind before you hit the road this month.

Be sure to check your spark plugs are in good condition. Replace the coolant in the radiator to avoid corrosion and damage to the system. Get an oil change or perform one yourself, and see if your oil and oil filters need replacing as well.

The oxygen sensor is another important part of the vehicle that greatly contributes to your fuel economy. It's not a bad idea to proactively replace the oxygen sensor while you're working on the vehicle-if you unknowingly drive around with a broken one, you could cost yourself a lot in gas money. Inspect all belts and hoses, paying special attention for looseness, cracks or general damage. Clean your battery terminals.

Re-align your wheels. Check the tire pressure in all tires.

Brakes are exposed during the wintertime and critical parts may freeze. Check this out, especially if you've noticed any differences in the way your vehicle handles. Replace worn brake pads. Check your owner's manual for further information on brake maintenance intervals.

And finally, be sure to test your windshield sprayer to ensure that it isn't frozen or clogged with particles and replace wiper fluid if necessary.

57...and counting

Over the weekend, the Minot Bishop Ryan Lions girls basketball team - led by Coach Julie Stewart - won their second consecutive State Class B Basketball Championship.

The 59-54 victory over a strong and spirited Shiloh Christian squad was the Lions' 57th in a row. That's quite an impressive feat, as sports records go. Just ask Joe DiMaggio.

As the winter sports season draws to a close, we at Ryan Family Dealers applaud the effort, commitment and accomplishments of all of our local student athletes.

And equally important, we tip our collective hat to the teachers, administrators, coaches and, most importantly - the parents - for their unwavering support of our children.

So to those students from Minot High School, Minot Bishop Ryan, Our Redeemers, Minot State University and students from all our area schools, Ryan Family Dealers says "well done" and we cannot wait to see what you accomplish this spring.

The Great Unifier

The Great Unifier

The truest test of our collective character, the finest measure of our spirit comes in the face of tragedy. It is in these moments when our better angels reveal themselves. Today, we at Ryan Family Dealers are focusing on eliminating once and for all one such unifying event - Cancer.

Cancer doesn’t care about the color of your skin, the God you pray to (or don’t), or the person you choose to love.

It doesn’t care if you voted Republican, Democrat or None of the Above.

Cancer isn’t concerned about your zip code or what tax bracket you fall under, nor is it interested in whether you own or rent.

And cancer certainly doesn’t care whether you drive Chevys, Hondas, Ca dillacs, Toyotas or Fords.

No, cancer is an equal opportunity offender.

Unless you are among the rare – and fortunate – few, you know someone who has fought cancer. Perhaps your loved one is in remission or cancer free. Too often, our friends, family members or colleagues have succumbed to this terrible disease.

Regardless, on this we can agree – cancer is a scourge that must be stamped out.

So today, on World Cancer Day, we at Ryan Family Dealerships stand shoulder to shoulder with cancer survivors, their family members and those who may be affected in the future.

We encourage you to support this cause, whether you are able to give of your time, your talent or your resources.

To learn more about the latest efforts to eradicate cancer, visit the American Cancer Society.

Who knows? The research we support today may save your life, or a loved one’s.

God bless.

Arrive Safely This Winter

Friends,

The heart of winter is no laughing matter here in North Dakota. Because of the vastness of our home, a reliable automobile is as important here as it is anywhere.

That’s why we’re offering this quick checklist of “to dos” for your car to ensure you and your family arrive safely to your destinations all winter long.

If you haven’t already done so, be sure to “winterize” your car, including a thorough checkup that includes:

·         Checking the ignition, brakes, wiring, hoses and fan belts.

·         Changing and adjusting the spark plugs.

·         Checking the air, fuel and emission filters, and the PCV valve.

·         Inspecting the distributor.

·         Checking the battery.

·         Checking the tires for air, sidewall wear and tread depth.

·         Checking antifreeze levels and the freeze line.

·         Your car should have a tune-up (check the owner's manual for the recommended interval) to ensure better gas mileage, quicker starts and faster response on pick-up and passing power.

Additionally, as every good boy scout knows, it’s critical to be prepared. In North Dakota winters, that means having the following tools at the ready should the unforeseen happen: a properly inflated spare tire, shovel, jumper cables, tool kit, first aid kit, working flashlight and batteries, matches and non-perishable food and drink.

Following these simple steps will help ensure we all arrive safely this winter.

Consumer Reports Pulls Recommendation for Toyota Camry

By Ben Klayman

DETROIT, Oct 28 (Reuters) - Toyota Motor Corp's reputation for quality took a hit on Monday when influential magazine Consumer Reports pulled its recommendation on three of the Japanese automaker's vehicles, including its popular flagship Camry sedan, due to poor crash test results.

While Toyota's luxury Lexus and namesake brands were ranked most reliable in the U.S. auto industry in Consumer Reports' annual new-car reliability survey, the magazine said it will no longer recommend the Camry, Prius v model or RAV4 sport utility vehicle because they received "poor" ratings in a crash test started last year by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

"We're a year into it, we've got over 50 vehicles tested and there's enough that are doing adequately on this test that now we're making the shift and pulling recommendations from any car that gets a poor" rating, Jake Fisher, director of auto testing at Consumer Reports, said of the IIHS test.

"Honestly, we don't take this lightly, but virtually every vehicle now in the family sedan category has been tested and the only one that has gotten a 'poor' is the Camry," he added. "At this point, we don't feel we can continue to recommend people buy a Camry when there's other good choices out there that do better on the test."

Consumer Reports is one of the most widely trusted names for consumers shopping for cars, and companies try to ensure their vehicles earn the magazine's coveted "recommended" rating.

Last year, the IIHS, a non-profit group funded by the insurance industry, increased the rigor of its tests to include crashes that involve only a front corner of a vehicle. Consumer Reports waited to adjust its buyer recommendations until it saw how the entire industry was affected by the test.

The magazine does not recommend consumers buy a car that fares poorly in any crash tests.

In the first nine months of the year, the Camry was the third-most-sold vehicle in the United States, behind two full-size pickup trucks. Its sales were up 1.3 percent from the year-ago period to 318,990 cars, compared with an increase of almost 14 percent by rival Honda Motor Co's Accord sedan.

Toyota has made changes to the Camry to improve its performance in the crash tests and IIHS is planning to retest the car in December, IIHS spokesman Russ Rader said. Companies that have modified a vehicle design sometimes seek a retest.

Last December, when IIHS gave the Camry its "poor" rating, it said the company's engineers had "a lot of work to do to match the performance of their competitors." Toyota officials said on Monday they "are looking at a range of solutions" to address the car's performance in the crash test.

Last month, Toyota's Corolla small car, which was redesigned for the 2014 model year, received a "marginal" rating on the IIHS crash test.

In addition to the three Toyota vehicles, Consumer Reports also dropped Volkswagen's Audi A4 car from its recommended list due to a "poor" rating on the IIHS test, Fisher said.

Ten other vehicles also lost their recommended status, but that was due to the overall quality of vehicles in their segments and not related to their crash test performances, he said.

The IIHS, which continues to score vehicles on side, rear, roll-over and front-end crashes, added an overlap test because nearly one-fourth of U.S. front-of-vehicle crashes that result in serious injury or death involve a single corner that strikes another vehicle or an object like a tree or utility pole.

In the overlap test, IIHS crashes a vehicle at 40 miles per hour into a 5-foot-high barrier on the driver's side that overlaps one-quarter of the vehicle's width.

Helpful Household Tips: Different Uses for Tea Bags

Tea tastes great, but did you know that it can be used outside the body as well!  Tea has a multitude of personal uses including:

·       Soothe Sunburn- If your skin has been burned badly then wet a few tea bags and place them on the affected area.  The tea will help to relive the sting.

·       Subdue Razor Burn- Razor burn is no fun at all.  Apply a moist tea bag to the burned area and feel the awesome relief!

·       Reduce Foot Odor- Bathe your feet in a tea bath for about 20 minutes every day to reduce any foot odor you may have.  The stronger the bath, the better the results.

·       Homemade Mouthwash- If you have a toothache or other mouth pain then try rinsing with peppermint tea mixed with a pinch of salt.

·       Dry Poison Ivy Rash- As summer approaches so will poison ivy season.  Dip a cotton ball or other towel in tea and apply to the rash.  Let the moisture dry on its own.  Repeat the process as needed.

What is Memorial Day?

Since 1971, Memorial Day has fallen on the final Monday in the month May.  Although most people know Memorial Day has something to do with men and women in the armed services, they do not know the true meaning or origin of the national holiday.  Originally called Decoration Day, many military members and family of those who served began honoring those who passed during the Civil War.  Decoration Day was originally scheduled to fall on May 30, but was eventually changed the final Monday in May to ensure a longer weekend for those who chose to celebrate the lives of their lost friends and family.  Memorial Day became an official national holiday in 1971.  Although all members of the service should be honored, Memorial Day serves as a time to recognize those who have fallen.  The White House flag is raised to half-staff for a portion of the day to pay tribute to those who have lost their lives while serving our country.  The entire Ryan Family is extremely grateful to all the men and women who have passed, served or will serve our country in the armed services!

Helpful Household Tips: Different Uses for Dental Floss

Have you been flossing?  Apart from minimizing dental bills and creating a brilliant smile, dental floss has some great uses that most people do not know about.  Floss is cheap and can be used all over your house…

·       Cut Delicate Food-Sometimes a knife is hard to come by, or maybe you do not have the right size to cut delicate food like cake.  Try using floss next time to get a clean cut!

·       Remove Cookies- The most delicious cookies are always the ones that don’t want to come off the baking sheet.  Slide floss underneath them after baking to remove them with ease and no mess left behind!

·       Lose the Ring- Ever had a ring stuck on your finger?  Whether you need to take it off for good or bad reasons, if it’s stuck then wrap the rest of your finger tightly with floss and slide the ring right off.

·       Hang Things- When the holiday season rolls around use mint dental floss to hang ornaments on the tree.

·       Un-Stick Photos- If you have two photos stuck together try using floss to get them apart.  Ripping them apart with your hands can cause damage to both, so slide floss between them and savor each picture for another day!

·       Floss- The most important use has to do with your beautiful teeth.  Keep a healthy smile by flossing every day.

These uses were found at the following link.

No Email After Work

The average work day is filled with dozens of emails, phone calls and even text messages.  Communication with others is constant and this continuous back and forth can wear on you as the day comes to a close.  Unfortunately, we know that sometimes you check your work email on the weekend, on the way home, or even worse…at home!  A recent study found that some of the most successful people do not open their email, or even answer their phone once the work day has concluded.  Why is this?  The study showed that when people are constantly in “work mode” they get burned out, crabby and their creativity tends to run out.  It is understandable.  The human body naturally gets tired around 3-5pm as it needs rest and relaxation.  The founders of 5 Hour Energy capitalized on this notion as they discovered that most people need a boost in the afternoon.  So, what can turning the computer or cell phone off after the work day do for you?  It can recharge your brain so you come to work energized.  It can re-boot your creative side so new ideas flow out of you.  Most importantly, keeping work at the workplace can dramatically change your health as it can reduce stress in your life.  We know you work hard, just keep it at the workplace so you can continue to shine!
